Frequently Asked Questions

What is soLinkable?
soLinkable is a source of all that is new, interesting, or popular on the internet. It allows you to share stories with others, browse and vote on links submitted by users like you, and discuss your opinions with like-minded people. We are run by the community, for the community.
How does soLinkable work?
Start by submitting a story you think that we should all be reading. Once submitted, it's placed in the queue where the article becomes open to the community. It's free to be commented on, praised, scrutinized, or just simply ignored. Any user can vote up the story if its deemed worthy, or vote it down for any reason. Once a story has received enough votes it's promoted to the front page where its chance to be seen increases greatly. However, if it doesn't get required number of votes, the story just languishes away in "Queued Links" purgatory. The community chooses what will (or won't) make it to the front page.
Why should I register?
Because you want to participate! Registering gives you the opportunity to have your voice heard. Once registered you can vote, submit, and comment on anything you want. It's easy too - signing up for soLinkable only take a few seconds with an email address. Get off the sidelines and join the community.
Where are the community guidelines?
They're around... But not finished yet... For the time being just remember to be nice, don't spam, and always make your voice heard at soLinkable.
How do I vote?
It's very easy. Once you're logged in, find a story you want to vote up, and hit the "vote" button. You will see the vote counter increase and the vote button will become disabled. That's it - You've just made your voice heard.
Can I unvote something?
Yes, but it takes a few extra clicks. First, go into your profile page. Once there, select the "voted" tab. And finally, in here you will have the option to "unvote" any stories you previously voted for.
What can I submit?
Any type of link can be submitted. If it has a URL, it can be submitted. When you're linking to a specific file type, please indicate with a tag like (video), (pic) or (PDF) in the title. If you are linking to material which may be unsafe for work, please use the (NSFW) tag.
Can anyone submit a link?
Of course! All you need is an account to begin submitting content to soLinkable.
What tags should I use?
Choose tags that both describe the content and are regularly used. If you try to stuff the tag line with very specific and unique tags, you'll just be shooting yourself in the foot. Your story will appear spammy and it won't get linked to similar stories, which could cost you votes from the community.
I made a mistake in my submission, can I edit it?
Yes. Once logged in, you should see the "edit" link located just to the right of the url address. This will bring you to a new screen which will allow you to make changes to the title, content, and tags. Unfortunately, at this time the thumbnail cannot be changed - so choose it wisely.

Can I submit items that are not in English?
Unfortunately, at this time soLinkable is only available in English and so we ask that only English links be submitted.
It says the domain has been blocked. How can I get it unblocked?
There could be a number of different reasons why a domain may appear blocked. THe domain may have been reported too many times, or there could just be a problem with our system (it randomly doesn't like some URLs). The best course of action is to contact us about the issue, and we'll get back to you as soon as possible.
How do I comment on a story?
In order to comment on a story you must first be logged in. The comment field is located beneath the last comment on the story page, labelled "Post A Comment". Simply enter the comment in the text field provided and click "post comment".
How do I reply to a comment?
Below the comment you wish to reply to you'll see a few options - reply and permalink. If you click reply, you'll see a new textbox open up directly below the comment titled "reply".

Can I edit or delete a comment I made?
Yes, as long as you're logged in. Below your comment you will see three options - reply, permalink, and edit. Selecting edit will take you to a new screen where you can edit your comment.
Is there a guide explaining the soLinkable comment syntax?
Of course. soLinkable uses the Markdown comment system. Their walkthrough can be found here, and there's also a soLinkable blog post which gives a good explanation.
How can I report an offensive or rude comment?
Any reports can be made quickly and easily through the contact us page. We rely on people like you to make this site enjoyable, and reporting abusive users is the best way to ensure community integrity.
What is the message center?
Clicking on the envelope at the top right corner of soLinkable will bring you to the main page of the new soLinkable message center, which lists the 25 previous conversations you've had on soLinkable. A conversation includes any private messages, replies to your comments, and first-level comments made to a story you've submitted. The basic setup of the page is as follows:
soLinkable message center
  • Menu Items: Easily navigate through the different screens within the soLinkable message center.
  • Type Of Message: Displays information regarding the type of message. Can be either a private message, post reply, or comment reply.
  • Title Bar: The who, what, and when. This information bar will indicate the username, subject (if applicable), and date of the message or comment.
  • Message Body: The actual content.
Why did the envelope turn red?
It means you have messages waiting. For the most part, the envelope will appear as a blue outline. But if you have an unread item in your message center, it will turn a sort of orange-red to alert you.

What is Karma?
As a registered user, your Karma on soLinkable is part of your identity. It's is a mathematical algorithm which takes into account a users submissions (published, queued, and buried), comments, and voting habits - Sort of a reflection of how great your contribution is to the soLinkable community.
How do I accumulate Karma?
Karma is given out using the following formula:
  • +0.5 for each upvote
  • +2 for each link submitted
  • +3 for each comment you make
  • +10 each time your link gets promoted
The weekly karma is a calculation of the karma you've gained over the past 7 days.
Why should I try to accumulate karma?
To show off your commitment and contribution to the soLinkable community, to become a verified user, and to get on the "Top Karma" list. So... For purely selfish reasons.
What is a "verified user"?
A verified user is essentially a trusted user. They've submitted a few good links, voted, and made some thoughtful comments. As you gain more karma, soLinkable begins to trust you and opens new functionality that was previously restricted, such as:
  • reCAPTCHA is not required for each link submission.
  • You can submit as often as you want (unverified users are allowed only one submission per 24 hours).
  • All NoFollow tags will be completely removed for all links (even links submitted before you became verified).
  • Submissions are no longer checked against Askimet, and are immediately placed in the Queue.
To be more specific (and for those interested), you become a verified user once you hit the 25 karma point threshold. We feel that if you're still around and contributing to the community by this point, we can trust you.
What is the "Top Karma" list in the sidebar?
The "Top Karma" list located on the right sidebar is a decending list of the top contributors on soLinkable (ie. those who have the most "karma"). It's very similar to the top commentators widget for Wordpress except that karma takes into account far more than just comments. Your username will link back to the "Homepage:" specified in your user profile. Instructions to complete this field can be found here. If no homepage has been entered, it will simply list the user without any link. It's updated once a day, and the algorithm takes into account the last 7 days.

Who are the Moderators?
Currently there are only two moderators: Jesse and Krystal.
How do you get to be a moderator?
We are always looking for new moderators - If you think you've got what it takes, contact us. It's a thankless job with no pay and long hours... but, uh, I guess hard work is its own reward...
Why isn't my submission/comment showing up?
Submissions often take a few minutes to appear in the queue. But it's also possible that our anti-spam systems or a moderator deemed your post to be spam. If you feel this was a mistake, please contact us and we will investigate the issue.
Do submissions get deleted?
We try to avoid moderating content, but unfortunately there are those who create accounts for the sole purpose of spam. Because of this, we may delete users or who blatantly submit spam, blogspam, or poor content. We also try to keep soLinkable welcoming and open. While we recognize the right to free speech, any submissions made in extremely poor taste may be removed from the site and could result in a ban of the offending user.
